Cultural Immigrant Initiative
Chashama implements Cultural Immigrant Initiative grants from various City Council members throughout the city on a yearly basis.
We have facilitated programming in council districts 4,5 and 38 in the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, the Upper East Side and Midtown. Implementing these grants has led us to work with a wide variety of organizations including VIP Mujeres (Violence Intervention Program), The Stanley Isaac Neighborhood Center, the Islamic Cultural Center, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital, NDWA (National Domestic Workers Association), SEIU – 1199 (United Healthcare Workers East), Atlas:DIY, Mixteca, CFL (Center for Family Life), Dedalus Foundation, NARS Foundation, BKLYN Clay and Earthworks NYC and many more.
Our collaborations have resulted in a wide variety of projects focused on engaging the immigrant communities that live and/or work in each district. Some of the projects include senior portraits and photo books, visual arts classes for youth, therapeutic clay classes for survivors of domestic violence, tours of Chashama’s visual arts studios at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT), personalized studio visits with Chashama artists, Muira Ori paper folding workshops and therapeutic arts & wellness classes for domestic workers and healthcare workers.
