chashama 161st Street Studios
Actually three storefronts along the 90’s block of 161st Street in Jamaica: 90-26 (2 stories) 90-30 (a studio space dedicated to one artist) and 90-32 (a space shared with local cultural organizations during exhibit events in the area).
90-26 was a 1st floor gallery and 2-floor multi-studio venue that also hosted youth programs run by Lawrence Joyner of Reconstruct Art.
90-30 was a 1st floor dentist office converted to a taxidermy studio for former chashama artist Lishan Chang (he later moved to another chashama space: 147-16 Archer Avenue before its de-acquisition).
90-32 was a 1st floor sformer nail salon and basement area acquired February 1st, 2010, and used occasionally for shared-space exhibits by cultural organizations, Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning (JCAL) and chashama, among others. The basement housed youth group studios and work space.
