Petra Nimtz was born and raised in Germany. After extensive years of traveling, she emigrated to Canada in 2002 calling Vancouver her home.

She excelled in the arts from childhood on, but it was only here that she began taking courses at Emily Carr Institute and eventually started painting.

After having studied at the Art Students League in New York over periods of time in 2006/2007, the influences of the New York School began to evolve in her work. Since then her work has been shown and is collected in the United States, Canada and Europe. She currently works and lives in Woodstock, New York.
