Raul Rodriguez is a self-taught visual artist from Brooklyn NY. His artwork is an extension of their experiences and the influences of people of color that have shaped and molded him into the man I am today. They want their work to reflect my culture and heritage. He uses acrylic on canvas, which allows them to be versatile in their approach to produce and express with many colors, layers and textures. He is drawn to images that lack luster and expression and transform them into works of art that convey a story, an emotion or a mood. He loves capturing and celebrating the beauty that represents us as a people and depicting the rich tapestries of our diaspora. His story is more about identity and showcasing where we come from and honoring our BIPOC ancestry and culture. He believes art is for anyone who can understand and identify that representation is an important part of our growth and development as human beings that should be accessible to all.
About Raul Rodriguez
A native of Brooklyn, Raul Rodriguez started creating art at a very young age. Heavily influenced by comic books and street art and graffiti, Rodriguez was mesmerized by the oversized fonts and vivid colors he saw in and around New York City. Inspired by music, dance, poetry and the African diaspora, his art deeply reflects his culture and his environment. Rodriguez prefers to express the multilayered experiences of Black and Latino people — strong and charismatic men and women that make a difference in our communities. Through the layers of his work, he aims to show the depth of the Black and Latino experience. He uses various mediums to embody the feelings and flow of movement of people. His art projects a vibe of the human body moving to its own rhythm.
