Zip City explores the human desire and longing for perception to recognize structures, borders, and geography. The title of “Zip City” is aplay on words in reference to U.S. zip codes and the use of common plastic zip ties which is the only material used to construct this work. The zip code (zone improvement plan) was invented for control and efficiency in U.S. mail delivery through a system of mapping. Marking our territory and assigning codes for the purpose of a city plan is a human act of dominance and control over nature and draws a boundary between us.

Bio:
Hong Seon Jang is an installation artist. He currently lives and works in New York City. Jang received his BFA from Dan Kook University, South Korea and earned his MFA in Imaging Art at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY.

He has attended Artist studio programs at AAI Residency Program, NY; Painting Space 122 in NYC, and residencies at Atlantic Center for the Arts, FL; Sculpture Space , NY; the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, NE; and Abron Arts Center in NYC.

Mr. Jang has been widely exhibited in solo and group exhibitions including McColl Center for Visual Art, NC, The Soap Factory, MN; Artspace, New Haven, CT; Smack Melon in NYC; Hangaram Art Museum, Seoul, South Korea; The Islip Art Museum, NY.
