Conventional wisdoms/stories we are told as young people inform our adult beliefs. These stories are so powerful that they inform our behavior at every level- Our who, what, why, where how? But what if these stories were lying to you?
You Are Not Here: May My Tracks Be a Map For Other Travelers is the first complete showing of Prudence Groube’s series of allegorical oil paintings, drawing from the tradition of Grimms’ fairy tales, that examine the significant moments in the demise of the artist’s passionate and tumultuous 12 year marriage to fellow artist Christopher Colvin. Groube posits that it is our collective responsibility to tell our respective stories - warts and all - in order to leave so-called “life maps” which the travellers who come after us may benefit from.
Participate in the panel discussion “Who are you and why should I care?” on Wednesday, December 17 between local artists and the community as the artists talk about their approaches to story-telling and the community tells the artists what stories that actually want to hear. All ages are invited to participate in the story-telling workshop and to contribute to the Fairy-tale Forest installation on Saturday December 20, “What’s your story?” led by art therapist and local Harlem artist Ida Marx and Prudence Groube.
About the Artist:
Australian born artist Prudence Groube’s world of MIMACHAN inhabits the space between the seen and unseen inviting the viewer to view through the candy colored lens of a pop culture drifter. The world of MIMACHAN does not have to make sense. There is no earth, no sky no boundaries. In this place a new language, a new way of being becomes possible.
Concerned with how language, self, and social identities are influenced as information and connectivity flourish and identities are increasingly digitized, Groube asks: "In a world whose borders are dissolving how do we find meaning when we have no shape left?"
Prudence’s work is in private collections both domestically and internationally. She has shown in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Miami in both solo and group shows. She is the founder and curator of COLLECTnyc - dedicated to the support and continuing education of emerging artists, creating events and programs that allow artists to interact with the community whom they seek to serve through their cultural contribution.
