Uptown Underground Market: The Residency

Uptown Underground Market: The Residency (UUM) is a market that celebrates the creations and ingenuity of Black women business owners. The market is based in East Harlem and will run from May 27 to June 27. As with all of their events, this market will feature a steady rotation of Black, women-owned businesses both in person and through UUM’s shelving system.

About the Business

Uptown Underground Market was founded by Andrea Reed, Vanessa Wells, and Veronica Wells-Puoane. Andrea, a jewelry maker, Vanessa, a graphic design artist, and Veronica, an author, were looking for ways to showcase and profit from their talents. What began as a way to highlight their own work immediately became a way to serve other Black women entrepreneurs as well. Launched in 2016, the market is designed to empower Black women small business owners. Since its launch in 2016, UUM has hosted over a dozen events throughout Harlem.
