Artist statement

I am interested in dealing with how to transcend physical and spiritual boundaries related to life and death by means of Buddhism and Korean Culture. These boundaries are going to be different, depending on where I am, or where I have been. They can be one of my memories or it can be one of my experiences. Furthermore, my works refer to such issues as the sacredness of the body as a place to house the soul, emotions, personal growth and loss, and identity.

Through this process, I created some images of healing and transformation. Making a physical image which is connected with the body using unusual organic materials can facilitate this transformation, growth, and change of my inner emotions and thoughts. My sculptures often refer to traditions and materials used by the Korean culture with a background in Buddhism. In my current works, to reveal this subject matter, I depict one of the important body parts, the bellybutton. I find this part of the body to be an entrance which connects a mother to an unborn child. Additionally, I believe the individual bellybutton represents one’s identity.
