Time-Space Capsule
Time-Space Capsule
By de novo dance
May 6 - May 11, 2014
Performance Hours: 8 pm - 12 am
Open Rehearsal: May 6, 2014 from 8 pm - 12 am
Urban Garden Room at One Bryant Park
(1111 Ave of Americas, 42-43rd Street and 6th Ave),
New York, NY
In this site-specific performance, de novo dance inhabits the Urban Garden space for 6 days between the hours 8 pm and 12 am. “Time-space capsule” invites the artists and the audience to enter a suspended time-space in the midst of an ever accelerating New York City in search for glimpses of stillness, simplicity, nature, and beauty. We use movement, non-movement, visibility and invisibility, vulnerability, and public engagement as vehicles for transformation.
Performed by de novo dance and guest artists, with seniors from HANAC JVL Senior Center, Astoria Queens.
de novo dance is a performance collective. We use dance, theater, music, and technology to create transformative, immersive environments which examine the human condition. We are especially drawn to the invisible aspects of daily experience - the longings, dreams, myths - which we find in both light and shadows. Our influences range from traditional cultural dance forms such as belly dance to experimentations in music and sound to butoh dance. Collaborating with non-performers, exploring audience interactivity modes, and actively engaged in outreach and educational programming, we blur the boundaries between performance and spectator. de novo dance exists to shift perception, give pause to our hypersonic lives, and offer space and time for meaningful exchange.
