Artist's Statement

My work presents images of great opulence that portrays the subject at its most glorious and lush, yet simultaneously suggest impending demise. When collectively viewed, the work's reference for traditional craftsmanship, Dutch still life paintings, and botanicals comes forth. Life, death, and implicit sexuality serve as themes. Pushing the material to its limits of sustainability, the physical act of carving the wax blends harshness with malleable beauty. The same applies to my paper cut-outs, whose overgrown and entangled density is achieved through a process of layering intricate botanical silhouettes. The vulnerability of my media coupled with the temporal nature of the subject matter, heighten the relationship between the physicality of the works and the viewers' own corporeality, and encapsulate the liminal state between life and death.
