Through Security explores relationships between aircraft, power, and control. Kathryn Keller Larkins' work considers how the capacity for flight, one of humankind’s most extraordinary achievements, has become a theater for some of our greatest fears. Controversies around immigration, real and perceived terrorism threats, and policing practices have drawn eyes heavenward with new associations. These large and medium-scaled watercolors of airport landscapes and helicopters in flight ground their subjects in contemporary times. What once might have been emblems of glamour, adventure, or opportunity, here are framed by current events and become vignettes of discomfort, force, and struggle.
Will fear or faith shape us? Fight or flight? How do we move? How are we moved?
