A direct reference to the Talking Heads, This Must Be The Place is Deborah Farnault’s second solo exhibition in New York. She will present a new body of works, which she has produced while a Swing Space artist-in-residence at Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in 2012. Farnault works in a variety of media – photography, silkscreen printing, and mixed media – toillustrate the hunt for an “ideal” landscape or for some peace of mind, balancing back and forth between chaotic and peaceful visions. It is a collection of encounters, sensory experiences, and feelings while making our way through life. Like in the New York band’s hit, it is about wanting to be home while getting lost in unconstrained thoughts. Farnault uses the myth of primal nature and confronts it to urbanism and settlement, observing how our relation to landscape has turned into a spectacle.

Artist Bio:
Deborah Farnault (b. 1983) earned a BFA from the ESAD Academy of Fine Arts, France and a MFA from the KUVA Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Finland. She has exhibited in France, Sweden, and the USA, including solo and group exhibitions; she has also recently been invited to present a solo project at Spazio Morris, Italy in November 2012. Her work has been purchased by public collections in France, and was featured in the Montrouge Salon for Contemporary Art, a French young creation prize. She was awarded four residencies: Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Swing Space Program, New York; The Old American Can Factory, New York; and the NIS/Treignac Projet, France for two consecutive years. In 2011 and 2012, she was also invited as a Visiting Artist to present her work at Parsons The New School for Design. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
