The Universe comes to Harlem this fall as chashama's 461 Gallery presents the mixed-media, oil and beeswax paintings by New York City artist Jennie Booth.

Booth fills the gallery with glowing portraits of an iconographic Universe walking through the landscape of Her own Consciousness.

Artist statement:

My paintings express the power and vulnerability of the human psyche when faced with its own vast and mysterious nature; a delicate nature that must be nurtured and respected in order to survive.

Our individual realities are a case of "all brain, all the time."  It is ironic that the "sane" interpretation of experience depends on a delicate mass of cells that we rarely think about. After losing loved ones to mental illness and struggling for years myself with Bipolar II, I have experienced firsthand how "reality" is truly a projection of the mind, and how the mind is vulnerable to the complex wiring of its motherboard, the brain. What is "Self" after all, when a modest blow to the head could completely change a person's character forever?

Through a layering of brain science, physics, psychology, iconographic traditions and landscape tableaux, my images are about the miracle of thought on the micro and macro scale.
