The Shape Of A Body

Citing instructive signage and vintage advertising as influences, Leonie Weber’s The Shape Of A Body uses the visual charm of the mundane to examine the dynamics of power and social norms. The series of drawings included in the show, “Her Part,” addresses the physical and emotional vulnerability of women, as well as double standards they are subjected to in professional contexts. The wall installation included, “Trust Me,” though without an embodied “speaker” or motive, suggests direct, sometimes personal insinuations of compliance through its sequencing and tone.

Over the last 10 years, language has been a primary element of Weber’s work. She uses original text, as well as appropriated language, and often applies further writing processes to found material with the creation of collages, or anagrams.

About the Artist
Leonie Weber relocated to New York from Germany in 2011. She graduated from Bauhaus-Universität in Weimar in 1999. Her work has been shown in Germany at venues such as Graphothek Stuttgart, Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe, Kunstraum Kreuzberg Berlin, New Museum Weimar, and Galerie Gudrun Fuckner in Ludwigsburg, and in group shows at Regina Rex and Jenkins Johnson Gallery in New York. Weber has been a resident artist of Chashama’s Space to Create program since 2012.
