The Self Exploratorium is a self-investigation lab and retreat space in the heart of New York City. The vast copper wall lined 3000+ sq ft space is dedicated to cultivating a greater appreciation of "what it feels like to be you" through inquiry-based, self-guided installations.

"The vision is a world where we think and sense for ourselves, develop greater sensitivity and appreciation for our own unique being, and extend that to the people and world around us.

We offer tools and experiences that help you become an active explorer in the art of your being through breath, creativity, perception, and observation.

Guide yourself through the space, meet experts of self-exploration, join us for evenings of art, performance, and coffee.

Come explore 'what is it like to be you?'"

Guided visits are encouraged and available by appointment.

About the Organization
Elana Langer’s What I Live By, is the first product-free brand. The most exclusive brand is inclusivity. It invites everyone as equal and different. What I Live By invites us to transform everyday clothing and accessories into affirmations of our value(s) by attaching the What I Live By logo to things we already own. For Langer, the ultimate luxury in life is thoughtfulness and our ability to apply it to our choices.

What I Live By was officially launched during FIAF's Crossing the Line Festival with What I Live By kiosks around New York City. Participants at the Self Exploratorium are invited to bring something they already own, brand it with a What I Live By label, and share the story of what they value.

About the Artist
Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Elana Langer, WILBy founder, studied philosophy and media forms in Toronto and Chinese language and philosophy in Hong Kong and Shanghai, China. She eventually landed at the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Media Lab's Future of Learning research group and remained there until she was invited to work as an education expert for the nonprofit group One Laptop Per Child.

A decade later, unable to reconcile the corruption and exploitation in the developing world with the ways in which agencies and governments often indirectly enable them, Elana began looking for more honest and effective ways to work to alleviate the pain and suffering in our world. She realized that in order to make any significant change we must start with our own language and culture. Her work includes the installations The Pop-Up [Ethical] Sweatshop, The Inner-Beauty Bar, and Eat Your Ethic, which have been presented in major cities around the world. Her installations have taken over hotel shops at the Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn and the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, and have brought her to sustainable fashion events worldwide, including the Global Fashion Exchange hosted by the Danish Fashion Institute.

Elana has taught media studies at SUNY College and Acadia University, and most recently at the graduate level at New School University. In August 2015, she was invited to deliver a presentation on The Pop Up [Ethical] Sweatshop at The Creative Time Summit: The Curriculum at la Biennale di Venezia.

“Elana Langer is a harbinger of humanity and an obvious provocateur.” —Jake Gyllenhaal, actor and environmentalist
