The Post-Structuralist Utopia: Now, with (Outdoor) CATS!

The Post-Structuralist Utopia: Now, with (Outdoor) CATS! | Dara Malina and chashama
October 1- 2, 2016, 1-6pm
Visitors are welcome to join or watch the cats at anytime between 1-6pm.
16 Harrison Place
Bushwick, NY
(the lot across from the Morgan L Stop)
This weekend, in conjunction with Bushwick Open Studios, chashama and the original "cat lady" herself, Dara Malina, will join forces to bring a post-structuralist, utopian "cat lady den" to a vacant lot in Bushwick.
An outdoor adaptation of Malina's original piece, The Post-Structuralist Utopia: Now, with CATS!, The Post-Structuralist Utopia: Now, with (Outdoor) CATS! invites performers, masked as cats--shedding all identifiers that would reflect race, gender, and class--and audience members alike to join the cat lady in her den under the tent. The cats only roles for the weekend are to sleep, eat, watch, and play. Designed and conceived by Blake Palmer and Dara Malina, under the tent will be Colby Cannon Welsh, Brian Dolphin, Dan "Danger" Rebholz, Daniel Zilewicz, Elizabeth LaPrelle, Francis Sappho, Jessica Hanson, Jessica Pearl Roses, Kelsey Kuehn, Lydia Mak, Sarah Zolt-Gilburne, and Shannon McPhee.
Enter the space: play with the cats, watch the cats, or become a cat. The den is a place of meditation and non-sense.
About the Creator/Director
Dara Malina is a director of theatre, performance, opera and video. Her experiments in performance range from durational pieces to evening length devised collages, including The Post-Structuralist Utopia: Now, with CATS! which will be memorialized in Ugly Ducking Presse’s Emergency INDEX this fall. Originally an indoor piece, The Post-Structuralist Utopia: Now, with CATS! was inspired by the cat gif as a representation of a post-structural utopian ideal. Mesmerizing in its repetition, the cat gif is a post-gender, post-race, post-class, post-structure, hallucinogenic escape our every day lives/the problems of the world. Most recently, Dara directed COSÌ, an experimental video featuring Mozart’s COSÌ FAN TUTTE, with The Pleiades Project. For more info, visit: www.daramalina.com
