(across from MoMA)
On view 24 hours a day
April 11 - 28, 2011
The Muze is the Illuminating force that invokes inspiration , creativity, and evolution. In this case, the Muze is based on the “pop-surrealism” genre of art that appeals to those within the hip hop & pop culture movements. Identifying with the struggles and wonders of urban life, Muze plays a role in freeing and liberating people to seek more from themselves, and live inspired, creative and empowered lives. With this insight we can make changes within oneself and the community. For this project, Cypha has chosen to use music and history as the theme for this monumental Mural work, and is quoted as saying “music is the skeleton key to memories unlocking present."
This exhibit is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
About the Artist:
Growing up in the Louis Pink housing projects in the East New York section of Brooklyn, Cypha’s creativity, imagination, and outgoing personality kept him from being a statistic that so often stigmatizes the black and brown communities. By the age of 15, Cypha began to develop his graffitti writing and learned from the styles of other grafitti artists and muralists of the late 1980’s. These influences helped to awaken his own unique styles By the age of 17, Cypha began to paint on canvas and wood panels.
For more than 20 years, without any formal training, Cypha continues to keep his creative integrity intact. His work is constantly evolving and spans the breadth of several different genres. Cypha’s current works are presented as “pop-surrealism,” where Pop Art and Surrealism are blended to express his vision.
