In the "Fish Market" series Hannah Fierman expresses themes such as "beauty in the grotesque," a sense of dark humor/horror as well as whimsically mocking the organic disgustingness (repulsiveness would be a better word) that unites everyone in the human predicament. The matting of each fish painting is part of the piece itself. Many of the mats and backdrops are newspapers collected by the artist during her travels. You will find newspaper matting from Kuwait City; Tokyo; Luanda, Angola; the United States; Frankfurt; Tbilisi, Georgia; Rota, Spain; and Catania, Sicily to name a few.
