Class: Archive and Architecture

The word archive has its roots in the Greek words arkheion (town hall) and arkhe (government / to rule). The word itself implies not only site but authority. How does this notion of location and government exist in today's culture of open digital exchange and global democracy? What are the implications of a cultural environment where physical location is less important than an Internet connection and the contents of any archive can be cloned and disseminated globally and instantaneously. In this class we will look at the ways artists have used the notion of archiving to investigate the significance of site and location in the construction of a cultural and personal archives and create works that reflect the changing architecture of the archiving process in the 21st century.

JEREMY HAIK
Jeremy Haik is an artist and film-maker living in Brooklyn. He is currently pursuing Masters of Fine Art in Photography, Video and Related Media at the School of Visual Arts. His work looks at the slippages and inconsistencies of language through the combination of material and digital practices.
