Submit/Submerge is a solo exhibition by sculptor and installation artist Rachel Mica Weiss. Drawing upon the archaic imagery of seafarers, Weiss’ sculptures interweave brightly colored rope, elaborately braided leather, and lustrous fibers with cold cement to create an array of intricately labored objects. Evoking the tools of a marlinspike sailor and the language of luxury leather goods, these objects hang about the gallery space like ominous pendulums or prized baubles.
Submit/Submerge grapples with the blurry intersections of pain and pleasure, utility and obsolescence. Weiss confronts the prospect of inutility with the comfort of repetition; she faces the potential futility of labor with the seduction of pattern. Echoing the material focus of the surrounding Garment District, the exhibition employs familiar materials in startling ways to explore the boundaries of human exertion and agency.
Rachel Mica Weiss received her B.A. from Oberlin College and her M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. She was the recipient of the 2011 San Francisco Foundation Murphy and Cadogan Fellowship in the Fine Arts and was a resident at the Vermont Studio Center and at Village des Arts in Dakar, Senegal. She has exhibited her work at venues such as SOMArts Cultural Center, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and the Fiber Philadelphia Biennial. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
