soma - and other spaces is a multi-media durational movement ritual / installation performed by Despina Sophia Stamos and Danica Arehart. The duet gradually unfolds amid the towers of midtown. Juxtaposing the time signature of the neighborhood, we seek to build a momentary "nest" for our bodies and our imaginations. The audience is invited to enter and stay for as long as they like. People are invited to bring their lunch as these are lunchtime performances.
About the artists:
Despina Sophia Stamos is a dancer/choreographer living and working in NYC since 1989. Her work has been presented throughout New York City at such venues as Dance Theater Workshop, PS122, PS1, as well as internationally in Greece, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Puerto Rico. Stamos is a founding member of the Modern Dance Awareness Society.
Danica Arehart is a dancer/performer, pottery creator/instructor, Reiki master, Body Talk practitioner (CBP), Somatic Movement Therapist (RSMT), Topf Technique/Dynamic Anatomy Instructor, Herbalist, and Flower Essence practitioner living in Brooklyn, NY. She has performed in Washington, D.C. with Lesa McLaughlin, Jan Taylor, and Quiescence, and in NYC with Thread Dance Theater, Sue Bernhard, Tony Silva, Mary Suk, Despina Stamos, Wen-shuan Yang, Laura Glenn, Nancy Topf, Jen Harmon, Ben Munisteri, Shua Group, and Jil Sigman.
