Statement
Native New York artist Michele Brody has been serving tea throughout the city since 2007, collecting an array of stories and experiences from a wide range of participants. Reflections in Tea is an interactive, community-based project inspired by the worldwide tradition of drinking and sharing tea. The ritual performance of preparing loose-leaf tea within special paper filters is shared with individuals and groups. Participants’ conversations are preserved by being transcribed onto the stained tea bags that have been dried and flattened, culminating in the creation of a fluttering paper quilt.

During the closing weekend of the exhibit, site-specific dancer Sabine Heubusch will perform an improvisational dance piece titled Five o’clock Tea Reflections within the installation, accompanied by a live reading of a few choice stories collected by Michele Brody in her roving Tea House. The stories will be read aloud by Brooklyn Poet Gary Glazner, who will also lead the audience in the creation of a group story poem to add to Ms. Brody’s growing Tea Quilt.
