On view are works inspired by the color red. Artist Jonathan Fischer spent months exploring the development, definition, and scope of red. The red of Alice in Wonderland. The red of love, passion, lust and of anger, wrath and violence.
He began with Sephora’s promotional post cards; a blood red 1980’s Rorschach as his first building block.
The series began by combining these post cards with lively red and white Japanese paper bags originally used to wrap a parcel airmailed from Tokyo.
As time progressed, Jonathan began to incorporate computer images. The collaged post cards were scanned and paired with red-themed cards cannibalized from his textile designs and graphics and then combined into panels.
Over several months of development, the definition and scope of the "Red Post Card Image" evolved many times. Each day new directions and new themes revealed themselves.
The mural and the book that grew from this work - and its relatives, familiars, and kindred spirits - are now presented.
About the Artist:
Jonathan studied color at Rhode Island School of Design with Professor Silman, a renegade professor from Yale. Silman worked as Joseph Albers’ assistant and was responsible for printing Albers' folios.
Much of Professor Silman's classroom time was spent learning to speak in metaphor when discussing color. Silman would display brilliant series of concentric square prints that were compared to the entire assortment of Shakespeare plays. There were deep dark blues, vibrant greens, and pale grays dancing with yellow.
At the end of the series, one color stood out. It was the color of intense tropical flowers. "Fuscia! Saffron! Rose!". Red is the Nemesis of White is referred to as his "Scheherazade," or maybe, his "Firebird."
Jonathan is also a studio artist in chashama's Workspace Program at the Brooklyn Army Terminal.
