Rebecca Norton's compositional decisions are derived from her personal experiences with a place or thing. The titles of her paintings indicate a situation from which she extracts feelings of light, space, time, objects, and/or people. Equations from differential mathematics, such as affine geometry (a geometry of betweeness), are used to delineate space, adding dimension and movement in a painting and its object. In time the work disengages from Norton's personal narratives, leaving the activity of a painting to be its own subject of incidents and de-centerings.
The Durst Organization maintains a continuing program of support for the Arts. By providing venues for exhibition in the lobbies of our buildings we hope to increase the presence of Fine Art and contribute to the cultural richness of the city.
