American photographer John McDermott first went to Angkor in 1995 to witness a total eclipse of the sun. Inspired by the surreal, otherworldly light, he returned again and again over the next several years and with unprecedented access he created a definitive artistic portrait of the ancient Khmer temples resulting in the acclaimed publication Elegy: Reflections on Angkor.  The Angkor photographs continue to inspire gallery exhibits around the world.

McDermott has been described by The New York Times as “the Ansel Adams of Angkor” writing that his photographs are “not just beautiful but iconic. . . dreamlike photos which look as though they were taken in an ancient, forgotten world.”

In addition to his Angkor work, McDermott competed photography projects throughout Burma, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam as he photographed sacred sites and the living culture that surrounds them. A well-received exhibit of these works were exhibited in Hong Kong as "Spirit and Stone" and the collection continues to draw much attention.

John McDermott's photography is on display as part of the permanent collection at the National Museum in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. His photographs are held in private collections worldwide and have been printed in numerous books and publications, including Time, Newsweek, The International Herald Tribune, and The New York Times. He continues to photograph around the world; his latest project taking him to Bhutan.

John McDermott is one of the most-sought after guides for private photo expeditions in Asia.  Currently, See Asia Differently offers enthusiastic photographers a photo expedition and workshop through the Angkor Archaeological Park and surrounding areas led by John himself.

Originally from Little Rock, Arkansas,  McDermott worked in the feature film industry in Los Angeles before arriving in Bangkok in 1993 to pursue work as commercial photographer. McDermott was chief photographer for an English language business and lifestyle magazine, which took him throughout Asia, and it was during this period that he began photographing cultural heritage sites.  He continues to be much in demand as a commercial photographer.

John McDermott has received accolades at the Lux and Awards, ADDY Awards, Epson International Pano Awards and the Black and White Spider Awards.  He lives with his wife and young children in Siem Reap.  For more information on the artist and his work please visit www.asiaphotos.net   Elegy: Reflections on Angkor is available exclusively in NYC at AsiaStore at The Asia Society on 725 Park Ave.
