Perfect Models is a preview exhibition ofSyd Glasser’s new series of life sized, mixed media portraits of women.  Working from carefully selected live models and photographs, the imagery of the exhibition is suggestive of the issues women confront daily and, simultaneously, celebrates their strength and life stories.

We are our stories.  For better or for worse ghosts of our past define and make us who we are.  Our bodies show proof of our battles through scars, winkles, and stretch marks: mere physical emblems our some of some of our struggles.  However, there are also myriad, mental melees that we are taught to silence and suppress.  Despite the wear and tear our bodies grow through, society continues to socialize women to look "beautiful" and behave deferentially.  The portraits of women in this exhibition preview a larger, in progress body of work that pays tribute to bold and brazen women who have refused to confine themselves to societal gender constraints.

The work in this show was created in a chashama studio residency at the Brooklyn Army Terminal.

About the Artist:

Syd Glasser graduated with a BA in printmaking and an MA in Student Affairs from SUNY Binghamton and from there continued to develop and maintain a practice as a professional artist.  Shortly after leaving Binghamton, Syd moved to Brooklyn, and her Sunset Park studio has become a place of solace and meditation. Often combining the beauty she finds in urban and architectural decay with images of figures and horses, her process pushes the boundary between abstract and representation and also tests our expectations of the appearance of her subjects.

Syd has shown her work in galleries throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan and has received several awards from SUNY Binghamton for her work in monotype and mixed media.  She currently maintains a studio residency with chashama.  In 2013 her work was featured as part of Curate NYC’s open call, and her work is currently featured at the Binghamton University Art Museum as part of their juried alumni art show.
For Syd Glasser, art is about the process and experimentation. Trained in figure studies, her current work includes images based on aspects of her life and illustrates moments of strength and vulnerability as they are witnessed and experienced.
