Participatory Performance workshop

The Total Styrene Experience is a roving laboratory for recycling Styrofoam into art and performance, turning the glut of discarded Styrofoam into an opportunity for experimentation and collaboration across live and visual art. Conceived by artist Lizzie Scott in collaboration with artist Michael Mahalchick and Curator Patricia Milder, Total Styrene pops up in different spaces for performance events at which we collect Styrofoam trash from the audience and the surrounding community.

Each event features work by 5 or 6 artists from all different disciplines, who use the collected Styrofoam to create experimental projects and performances. The roster of participating artists changes with each event. Events are open to the public and usually free of charge, although we encourage the audience to bring some Styrofoam trash to recycle. The Total Styrene Experience aims to create a small temporary space for intellectual generosity and experimentation in resistance to the commercial and institutional models of competition and commodification that define current art worlds. It celebrates the alchemy of making toxic Styrofoam trash into a source of artistic abundance. Truly a laboratory for experimenting and developing new ideas, the project focuses on the materials and processes of artistic creation.
