Parallel Lines Meet || Spaces Unbidden and Untamed, chashama's inagural presentation at 470 Vanderbilt, features works by Derek Frankhouser and Stephanie Beck.
Derek Frankhouser's animation and installation works are the result of a practice that begins with drawing and borrows from neuroscience, psychedelic comics, figure drawing, science fiction, and conceptual art. His featured works reconsider truths of visual perception such as the fact that a single image is formed in the mind’s eye from two slightly different images or that an object must shrink as it moves away.
Stephanie Beck sees buildings as "surrogates for ourselves." Interested in the overlap of the internal and external structures that create spaces such as cells, skeletons, and the columnal forms that make up both our bodies and our buildings, Beck's work explores connections between architecture and nature--between "spaces that we construct with precision and those that spring up unbidden and untamed around us."
Her featured installations consist of multiple modular units (either tall “towers” or cube “cells”), which interact with each other in a diversity of ways--recombining to suggest "architecture" in one configuration and "biological forms" in another. Working primarily with paper, which, while ephemeral, can be surprisingly strong and resilient, all of her work is hand-drawn and cut. Beck's process, time-consuming and meditative, reintroduces the "imperfect human hand" into the production of forms that typically are made to be pristine. Her work is invariably drawn from the buildings and constructions around her, which she distills into simplified forms. She is then able to manipulate these massive structures on a more intimate scale and rearrange them to create new interpretations of place and movement. Through her sculptural work, Beck exposes the fragility and transience within the seemingly static architecture of public and private spaces alike. At the center of this is a feeling of instability and impermanence, which can be both playful and sobering.
About the Artists:
Derek Frankhouser was born in 1988 in Illinois and currently lives and works in New York City. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Missouri in 2011 and was awarded a J. William Fulbright Grant to Germany in 2012. He develops projects in a variety of media including drawing, printmaking, moving image, and sculpture. He also produces Created: In the Studio, a web series that showcases emerging artists.
Stephanie Beck is a Brooklyn-based artist working with paper as a sculptural medium to explore experiences of place and architecture. Stephanie has an M.F.A. from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, a post-baccalaureate degree from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and a B.A. in Art History from the University of Virginia. Select recent exhibitions and projects include solo public art events in Istanbul, Turkey and Fort Collins, CO;, a two-person exhibition at Musee d’art Modern Andre Malraux, Le Havre, France; group exhibitions at The International Print Center of New York, NY; Cite de ‘l’architecture et du patrimonie, Paris, France; The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Summit, NJ; AIR Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; and Fort Collins Museum of Art, Fort Collins, CO.
Beck has participated in various artist residencies, including the Artist Studios program at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, NY, an exchange program in Le Havre, France, and residencies at the Center for Book Arts and Triangle Arts in New York, NY. Beck also collaborates with a local dance/theater company, Racoco Productions, on set and prop design, and has worked with them on performances and installations at spaces throughout New York City, including Incubator Arts, CAVE, chashama’s Summer Performance Series, and at the Strand Theater in Plattsburgh, NY.
