Carl Mehrbach

Carl Mehrbach makes three-dimensional abstract images. These paintings and drawings are products that reflect years of self-discovery. Mehrbach began his career as a figurative artist, studying with Philip Guston during the last two years of Guston’s life. Some of Guston’s influence may remain, but Mehrbach is now making images completely his own. These images have been called imagined landscapes or imagined spaces. The forms in these spaces are articulated through line and color. Atmospheric color coherency creates a sense of place. This allows Mehrbach to create unified images that juxtapose disparate elements. The high quality of these works reflect Mehrbach’s vast history of brainstorming. He likens his process to that of an engineer using a problem solving loop. This exhibition shows works that are uniquely Mehrbach’s. They are based upon his own personal history and his great assimilation of the knowledge that is modern and contemporary painting and drawing. Mehrbach has found a way to best express his deepest instincts, intuition, and intellect.

About the Artist
Carl Mehrbach began his college education as a scientist; he dropped out of a PhD program in Oceanography to pursue painting. Mehrbach moved to New York City to study at Art Students League of New York with Bruce Dorfman. Dorfman introduced Mehrbach to the painter Seymour Leichman, with whom he apprenticed for four years. Later, Mehrbach studied with Philip Guston at Boston University, where he received his MFA in painting.

Carl Mehrbach has had many exhibitions and numerous reviews of his work. His high regard for drawing as intrinsic to excellence in painting has made him a constant draftsman, producing new drawings daily. In 2019, Mehrbach will have solo shows at Bromfield Gallery in Boston, and AVA Gallery in New Hampshire.
