Ricky Sears creates drawings, paintings, and sculptural models about the natural and constructed environment. He has been inspired by the exterior aesthetic transformation of residential home design in suburban America as small homes are torn down to make way for large houses. For his chashama window at 266 W. 37th Street, he turns his attention to the interior of a New York City storefront to create Our Space. Our Space is a site-specific installation of the traced silhouette of his shadow.
Completed after several hours of tracing his shadow, Our Space creates a visual record of how much space his body occupies. Ricky Sears considers the space he occupies to reflect the impact he has on the natural and constructed environment. He hopes that with this public installation viewers will consider the space they occupy and how their bodies impact the environment. The title refers to the visual manifestation of the space (the artist's or the public's) body occupies.
Ricky Sears earned his MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts. He lives and works in New York City.
