Oscar Oiwa paints parallel worlds so close to ours that they may exist just beyond our perceptions of reality. Though much of his work contains echoes of the apocalypse (sometimes natural, sometimes man-made), moments of light still shine through these fanciful worlds. Architecture and the objects of our lives show signs that people once inhabited these worlds, but at these moments humanity has disappeared - leaving room for the natural and supernatural.
Whimsical optimism permeates Oiwa's universe. A giant looming gecko may overtake your office, but it provides shaded respite from the desert heat. A bedroom contextualizes objects with efficient absurdity, featuring ceiling workstations or vertical beds. As with all of Oiwa's work, he leaves just enough space for the viewer to decide where they belong within it, and once inside (or looking from without), there is further capacity to transform.
Born in Brazil to Japanese immigrants, Oiwa moved to Tokyo following his graduation from São Paulo University. He relocated again after ten years, setting up his studio in NYC in 2002. He has received awards from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Asian Cultural Council, and has received a Guggenheim Fellowship. This exhibit is supported, in part, by the Consulate General of Brazil in New York.
