Open Practice is a 7-day public performance/installation experimenting with presence, process, intention and manifestation as modes of operation. The artist will facilitate the  conception and construction of the space through seven days of real time actions between the artist and the public. The artist and the public are the central components to this process of transforming the 1500+ sq ft gallery/art space from a space of neutrality to a active ritual/performance space itself. The artist will prescribe a specific task of the day on the gallery wall which reflects the Shapist core principles and means of production.

As the physical presence evidences genuine experience each day of the performance, the process becomes the work itself. The prior day's work accumulates into the next, creating memory and material residue upon which the artist will, on Day 7, physically engage with all the assembled knowledge acquired of the past 6 days. The work itself is an investigation of body, materiality, collected memories and the performing/understanding of ritual. It instigates the willingness of the public, the fortitude of the space and the surrounding environment to trace the physical origins of belief.

The concept of shapism was conceived from an artistic exchange between myself and artists Preach R Sun and Ken Marcelle based on the primary intention of shaping perception through the art of performance. From that, my concept of the 1st American Shapist House for the Practice of Performance/Ritual was born as a durational performance. The first performance was presented in Chicago at Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery. This will be the second installment of the work.
