Over the past twelve years, Zonis’ career has catapulted from that of a struggling artist working at MoMA's bookstore, to an Art Maverick whose works are sought by celebrities, real estate professionals and high-end restaurants. This is the third exhibition of Zonis’ artwork sponsored by the Durst Organization. Past exhibits featured pastel on paper drawings, but in this exhibit Zonis translates his signature “visual rock & roll” style into large-scale oil on canvas paintings.

Curator LL Powers, who encouraged Zonis to add oil on canvas to his repertoire, remarked that Zonis’ work “exercises sheer delight in the cacophonous urban environment, constructing a rollicking city whose rhythms, patterns, and colors convey a sense of delirious joy.” In his recent works, the moneyed inhabitants of his paintings are not only shopping and walking their lap dogs through the city, they’re also relaxing in parks and driving convertibles in the Hamptons. The world is for their pleasure and leisure.

In Zonis' brightly colored vision of this lavish lifestyle, spaces dilate and contract, sensuous curves on buildings, cars and bodies are accentuated- leading the eyes this way and that in a giddy attempt to resolve the geometries. As more and more people taken by his vision, Zonis’ art career, like the roads in his paintings, continues up, up, up.
