Meditation on Light
Mo Lee
“Meditation on Light” presents recent paintings by abstract painter Mo Lee. Drawing on her background in mathematics and architecture, Lee approaches painting through intricate geometric structures. Within these uniform frameworks, the shifting colors generate pattern, rhythm and movement. While the designs are inspired by traditional basket-weaving and textile practices, disciplines that span cultures and depend on rigor and patience, the paintings themselves remain entirely flat. Each dab of paint rests directly on the support; there is no physical “over-under,” only the unified surface built through methodical placement of color. While the precision of the work may suggest digital origins, the process is entirely manual and laborious. In this slow and deliberate practice, she honors the generations of women whose hands sustained families and communities through daily acts of making and care. Lee’s paintings celebrate the unseen work that keeps the world moving.
