Asphodel Meadows is a geographic division within the Greek underworld where ordinary people live out their eternities after death.  It offers neither the wretchedness of the Fields of Punishment nor the splendor of Elysium. It is a place of anonymity and subdued satisfaction, simultaneously strange and banal, like the pleasing but aloof flowers from which it derives its name.

"Meadows Underground" sets this world of beauty and shadows within the context of other, familiar underworlds.  It conjures the underground subways within which city-dwellers spend much of their waking lives and seeks the ecstatic secrets that hide within the mundane. Visitors are invited to don white masks and enter the interactive installation where performers recite from accounts of the lush shadow world, from Homer’s Odyssey to the poetry of Longfellow and Pope, as subway announcements slice through the soundscape.  The performers, residents of this surreal environment—part waiting room, part subway-car, part mythical landscape—produce actions that seem to emerge out of the space itself.  Each performance will last 4 to 6 hours with visitors coming, staying, and going at their own whims.  The duration of the work reflects the wonder and horror of an existence that flits between ephemerality and eternity.
