During their residency at chashama 461 gallery, artistic director/playwright Adam R. Burnett will develop Buran’s newest large-scale theatre piece, Mammoth: A De-Extinction Love Story, through generative writing sessions and developmental rehearsals with the ensemble. Buran company members will participate in the residency by exploring thematic materials surrounding the generated text, including, but not limited to, an exhibition (curated by Seth Cohen) and a community-engaged open house (organized by Georgina Escobar).

Inspired from recent scientific studies on (de)extinction and positioning time & duration as a structure for exploring romantic love and resilience, MAMMOTH will be new experiential terrain for Buran Theatre. Burnett’s script will construct a narrative to explore the nostalgia of science and the hard data of the heart, designing a theatrical space where the woolly mammoth becomes a site for projections of desire, obsession, myth and folly.

Buran Theatre ensemble for the chashama residency includes Starr Busby (performer), Adam R. Burnett (playwright/director), Seth Cohen (curator), Georgina Escobar (community organizer), Jean Goto (performer), Spencer Lott (puppeteer/designer), Mindy Leanse (puppeteer/performer), Nicholas Kostner (designer), Erin Mallon (performer), Michael McKim (performer), Casey Mraz (composer), Davey Rogulich (production manager), Jennifer Stimple Kamei (designer), Jeremy Xido (performer), Mari Yamamoto (performer), Christopher Zachary (performer), and others TBA.

*Public Generative Hours: In attempt to demystify the generative act of theatre-making, playwright Adam R. Burnett hold public writing hours, making himself present to discuss the work, exposing the source material – both textual and personal – in tandem with the development.

**Exhibition: Curated by Seth Cohen, the exhibition will dynamically interact with the theatrical development of Mammoth. The exhibition will incorporate formal theatrical strategies to blur the line between disciplines; highlight and reinforce themes of solitude and introspection - "pristine isolation," implicit in the text; and create an environment that will influence the creative choices of the writer and the interpretations of the audience.

***Open House Sunday Workshops: Georgina Escobar will lead three Open House workshops in the spirit of community, amplification through participation and collaborative productivity. Conducted in English and Spanish, participants will collaborate around the building and imagining of MAMMOTH and other ancillary projects of Buran Theatre company members.
