Lolita's PTSD explores how the psyche, the body, and culture shape each other. Drawing on the writings of Medieval female saints, self-help books, and feminist texts, Erin Hinz creates images of self-preservation and the longing for perfection. Set in domestic settings such as the bedroom or bathroom, her figures attempt to reconstruct themselves, but are ultimately incomplete, defective results, comprised of miscellaneous body parts. While Hinz's figures search for relief--engaged in ceremonial cleansing or beautification rituals, spells or prayers--their extreme states reveal the longing for vindication inherent in self-objectification.
About the Artist
Erin Hinz (b. 1983, New York City) received her BFA in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA in painting with a minor in gender studies from the University of Notre Dame in 2014. She has been featured in magazines and online art spaces including Slayer Gallery, Fresh Paint Magazine, and the Women's Caucus for Art and has been published in the Brooklyn Rail and Art Critical. She has exhibited widely, including Momenta Art in Brooklyn, NY; Knockdown Center in Queens, NY; Zhuo B. Art Center in Chicago, IL; Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts in Wilmington, DL; Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas, TX; National Association of Women Artists in New York, NY; and Laundromat Art Space in Miami, FL. She currently works out of a studio provided by chashama's Space to Create program in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
