Inspired by the Toba Khedoori quote: "I think that I am in a position to see different and even contradictory things about one idea, and integrate them into my work, sometimes intuitively and sometimes consciously," Paul Nam’s oil paintings represent relationships of memory, space, time, distance, temperature, and mood. The hours Nam spends painting his canvases allow him to re-familiarize himself with certain places in his past. Through memory, the morphology of these places become more imaginary and simplified, and with each layer of color, the old memories are replaced by the current versions. This drives the abstraction ever further away from the reality of the past moment and into its own vibrant existence in the present.
Nam is a South Korea born American artist. He received his MFA from Pratt Institute of Art in 2000. His work has been exhibited throughout the New York City area since that time. His studio is in New Jersey, where he also teaches at the Naom Studio of Art.
