Artist Statement:
Interior Hangings is a series of minimal wall sculptures made of fabric and window screen. This work stems from my fascination with interior objects that seem to have mysterious purposes. I am drawn to fabric because of its transformative properties as well as its reference to domestic interiors. Pieces of window screen, a transparent link between interior and exterior, act as “threshold” areas in the work, points available for entry or exit. Each piece begins with drawings that evolve from forms I have observed in architectural details, furniture, or other interior elements. I revise as I work, making intuitive decisions as I fold, cut, assemble, sew, and sometimes draw on the fabric. I stop when I recognize the sculpture as a presence. -Natalie Beall
