In the Fold
MG DanceArts

In the Fold is a recurrent, site-specific, and multidisciplinary performance between sculptor Caleb Nussear and Jazz trombonist and composer Ryan Keberle that contemplates nostalgia and dreaming through the study of sense and perception. For the 6th iteration of this project Caleb and Ryan will be joined by choreographer Marielis Garcia (MG DanceArts).

In the Fold is a geometric abstraction through music, visuals and movement in which the viewer is asked to suspend reality and join the fold of collective dreaming toward the urban ideal of humanization of modern technology, architecture and creativity.

The evenings will feature live jazz performance, contemporary dance, and multi-projector slide projection onto intricately folded paper screens. The performers will have distinct stations in each area, but will also intermix and improvise during the course of the performance. The attending audience will be encouraged to do the same.

About the Artists
Ryan Keberle
has developed a one-of-a-kind voice both on his instrument and as a bandleader, earning distinction among jazz’s most adventurous new voices. Keberle’s music integrates his wide-ranging experiences into a highly personal vernacular—immersed in jazz tradition, drawing on world music, pop and other influences, seeking fresh and original pathways. His work has been praised and recommended by notable sources including the New York Times, Billboard, and the Wall Street Journal. Since 2004, Keberle has served as the Director of Jazz and Brass Studies at CUNY’s Hunter College in Manhattan.

Caleb Nussear‘s work is a continuation of his education in philosophy and religion; it suggests a higher dimensional order and the equivalency of the human figure with a complex recursive geometry. Further influences are the natural landscape as it is found, an asymptotic “approach” to the work, and the sensuous and tensile drawn line. He is comfortable working in drawing, sculpture, installation, and performance; perhaps his favorite method of working is within project-based collaborative ventures with fellow artists and thinkers from a wide range of disciplines. Nussear exhibits his drawings and sculptures regularly in New York City and the surrounding environs.

Marielis Garcia seeks to choreograph environments that foster a sense of curiosity, stimulate creativity, and promote transparency and exchange. Using rigorous movement language and uncompromising conceptual investigation, Garcia collaborates with various artists to present works that show the inherent and inevitable unpredictability of performance. Her work is especially roused by the millennial age, in which identity is often a difficult conflation of public and private persona, both on and off digital platforms. She is interested in enmeshing performers and audiences in interactions that protect individual autonomy, while supporting active and empowered involvement. By creating video, theatrical and site-specific productions, her work demonstrates the vitality of the virtuosic dancing body and the ephemerality of dance, while inviting a sense of belonging.
