In a Box is a situation, an environment, a cocoon. Revolving around the theme of the couple, this installation studies the unions and collisions of two people in a relationship. The intent is to create an intimate habitat in which the performers can feel free to tap into concrete emotional states through various physical impositions (ex: restriction) and merge into one another. In an open space scattered with men's dress shirts, two chairs and one bed, visitors are welcomed to observe, up close, the interactions, fluctuations, obstacles and solutions found by the couple.
Dorotea Saykaly is a Montreal based dancer. She has been a member of Compagnie Marie Chouinard for the past 7 years and has performed lead roles in the company repertoire, such as the Prélude à l'après midi d'un faune and in Orpheus and Eurydice. She has been increasingly interested in the screendance genre over the past 3 years. Two of the shorts which she choreographed and performed in, PAINTED and Brief Candle (both directed by Duncan McDowall), were in competition in various international film festivals such as Dance Camera West in LA, Cinedans in Amsterdam, Dance on Camera in NY and recently the Festival du Nouveau Cinema in Montreal. She is currently collaboration on another film with Duncan McDowall entitled Wasteland, as well as experimenting with live choreographic works, such as In a Box.
A native of Toronto, Canada, Gerard Reyes graduated from Ryerson University with a BFA in Dance. He has worked for contemporary dance companies such as Marie Chouinard, Bill T. Jones, Danny Grossman and Shen Wei Dance Arts and also as a freelance dancer with Luther Brown, Noemie LaFrance, Germaul Barnes and DA Hoskins. As a choreographer, Gerard Reyes has been creating works since 2002 and is currently in the process of developing a new solo piece entitled The Principle of Pleasure.
