HIC SVNT DRACONES is an installation/rehearsal/performance residency exploring a contemporary terra incognito through the mediums of dance, text, video and sound.
At open rehearsals, a viewer is subjected to various degrees of witnessing, from the distance of a more traditional point of view, to being implicated and invited into the actual environment, to being challenged as to why they are not more involved. Where is the entrance/exit into and from within our perceptions?
HIC SVNT DRACONES (HSD) comes from the 15th century cartographers’ term used to describe the interior of an unexplored, unmapped and undocumented continent. During the 19th century, this term disappeared from maps, since the coastlines and countries of the world had been fully explored, mapped, owned, fought over and reclaimed. HIC SVNT DRACONES is an entrance into the contemporary terra incognito of being human. Holmes explores the space between a physical sense of time, history and place, and emotional truths that are masked or unrevealed due to familial, social and cultural restraints.
Developing and performing HSD at Chashama in collaboration with artists Keith Biesack, Adam Kerbel, Kristopher K.Q. Pourzal, Charlie Rauh and Devika Wickremesinghe, they dig deeper into the edges between the personal and mythic, reason and passion, movement, thought and the world, and bring to relief the maps of illogical poetic narratives the body holds.
HIC SVNT DRACONES has been in development since 2012 through residencies with Movement Research (NYC), The Dragon’s Egg (Mystic, CT). Hanna’s Barn (Vashon Island, WA) and Studio Current (Seattle, WA).
