"Glorious Gardens and Landscapes" is a series of photographs documenting world-renowned landscapes and gardens that are featured in the forthcoming book The History of Landscape Design in 100 Gardens, authored by Dr. Linda A. Chisholm, faculty at the New York Botanical Garden.
As the official photographer of the book, Garber created images that visually illustrate the design concepts reflecting a particular period and culture. The book will be published by Timber Press in the spring of 2017.
This exhibition was originally produced by Audrey Leeds and Stephanie Garber at Rockefeller Park Gallery, Pleasantville, NY.
About the Artist:
Michael Garber, a landscape, nature and portrait photographer, is intrigued by the subjectivity of light and is drawn to objects as they are transformed in changing light. He employs light as a design element in shaping and capturing his images. Dramatic scenes attract his attention especially where color and texture add depth and intensity. He has a special affinity for clouds with their visual power.
He has been greatly influenced by how images are shaped by the diversity of light in different geographies. His experience living in France and Mexico and viewing the subtlety of French light in contrast to the luminosity of Mexican light has shaped his view that light transforms people and landscapes. As a summer tour conductor, while studying at the University of Wisconsin, he travelled extensively in Western United States and Canada and experienced the beauty and open spaces in this rugged landscape. While on a six month journey through Central and South America he was not only exposed to a diversity of light in the Andes and the flat coastal plains, but also a myriad of cultural influencers that have opened him to seeing landscapes and people from different vantage points. Extensive travels in Western Europe has enriched him culturally and revealed varieties of light from the Mediterranean to Ireland and Scotland. These travels and living experiences have given him insights into different societies and opened his eyes to viewing the world around us through multiple lenses and appreciating the beauty of different contexts.
Michael studied photography at the International Center for Photography in New York City with Bobbi Lane, noted photography teacher and educator. As a guest teacher for Bobbi Lane’s portraiture classes, he taught the process of how to create a photo essay.
He is completing a book, Vince, Portrait of an Aging American, a five year visual story of his friend, Vince, who died in 2009. The book documents the diminishing world of an aging American and his struggle to maintain dignity and self-worth.
