Comprised of "vibrant colors derived from nature’s unique and incomparable palette," colors often used in yogic therapy to transmit uplifting and healing vibrations, Flower Shower Mandalastransmit! projects images from Suran Song's "participatory photo portraiture project of the hands of New Yorkers in yogic mudras" onto the windows of 1351 Amsterdam for passersby to experience. Inspired by the Sanskrit Pushpam Veda Mantra, Song's "intense optic sensation" offers a unique opportunity to discover and fully experience a spectrum of color and organic patterns.
About the Artist
"Sanskrit and the civics of politics are both strong influences on my work. I am interested in manifesting love into forms that are not possible in conventional modes of conditioned perception, intention, and behaviors. I am also inspired by Yoga, which serves as a primary medium in my creative process, as another artist might use paint or the brush. My work encompasses printmaking, painting, installation, sculpture, photography, video, and performance art. I am interested in engaging with the public by making experiential art that transcends the viewer. Working in a multitude of disciplines further allows me to continually test the boundaries of the senses, the embrace of Sanskrit and the breath, all core elements that inform my artistic path." -- Suran Song
Song recently completed a large scale mandala, commissioned by The Neuburger Family and her work is also part of an ongoing exhibit brought about from her 2012 Residency with The Laundromat Project--her "Yogic Body Prints & Principles” banner-performance installation is on permanent exhibition at JH Laundromat in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY.
Her "Flower Shower" mandalas and sidewalk video are being shown at Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee, WI from February 16th through May 14th, 2017 as part of the exhibition Ornate/Activate curated by Alexander Campos. In October 2017, Song's performance piece--a "cell phone fast" entitled "There is more to life than increasing its speed (we need each other here)"--will be part of "Art in Odd Places:SENSE" at Union Square, NYC and her "Flower Shower" mandalas will resurface at The Lake George Courthouse Gallery, in Lake George, NY, September through October 2017.
