Filling Space features abstract works on paper that highlight the interaction between chance and intentionality. In this body of work, Miyaoka-Pakola uses only ink and graphite to place these materials in dialogue with each other. Utilizing multiple techniques to apply ink on paper such as pouring, spraying and soaking, he allows the materials to interact without a deliberate outcome. The surfaces are then painstakingly grinded and burnished with graphite to manipulate the ink’s marking of negative and positive space. Through this simple conversation between the imprecise and the meticulous, Miyaoka-Pakola’s work creates a complicated visual space full of room for contemplation.
JJ Miyaoka-Pakola received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and his BFA from Tyler School of Art. His work has been exhibited nationally at the Memorial Hall Gallery at the Rhode Island School of Art and Design, Harbor Gallery, New York, the Crane Arts Center, Philadelphia, PA, the Roger Brown Study Collection, Chicago, Side Car Gallery, Hammond, Indiana, Jay Jay Gallery, Sacramento, and the de Young Museum, San Francisco. He was a fellow artist in residence at the Montana Artist Refuge in 2011. Miyaoka-Pakola currently lives and works in New York City.
