Fabric and Stone is a collaborative installation and artist-run marketplace featuring works by stone carver and sculptor Gabriele Hiltl-Cohen and master tailor and period costume maker Ute Hiltl. The exhibition features textile works, wearable art, hand-carved stone sculptures, and works on paper. Ute Hiltl’s fine garments, pillows, cushions, blankets, and masks are inspired by her diverse collection of textiles and are influenced by different cultures and fashion movements from around the world, while Gabriele Hiltl-Cohen’s work explores patterns found in nature and investigate the materiality and structure of stone itself.

About the Artists:

Gabriele Hiltl-Cohen is a stone carver and sculptor and was born and raised in Germany. Trained as a stone carver at the Meisterschule fuer Handwerker in Kaiserslautern Germany, she studied sculpture at the Arts Students League of New York and holds a BA in Art History and Studio Art from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Hiltl- Cohen was a cathedral carver at the Cathedral Saint John The Divine in New York City. Other work includes The Gateway Totem Project, a permanent public art sculpture celebrating immigrants in Morristown, New Jersey. The project was in part funded with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional works include projects at Princeton University, Drumthwacket, Governor’s Mansion in Princeton, NJ, the Cannon House Office Buildings in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts in Madison, NJ, Drew University, and the Old Opera House in Frankfurt, Germany. Her works can be found in homes and gardens in the United States and abroad. She lives and works in New Jersey.

Ute Hiltl, born and raised in Germany, is a Master Pattern Maker, Tailor and Costume Maker with over 40 years of experience in the industry. Specializing in period and contemporary costume making, she has worked in many theater, opera, ballet and film productions. At the National Theater in Mannheim, Germany she worked with director Jerome Savary and his group “Le Grand Magic Circus”. Other works include productions at the Pfalz Theater in Kaiserslautern, Germany, Die Kammerspiele in Munich, Germany, and the New York Theater Ballet in New York City. Hiltl was the head of the men’s costume shop at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC for several years and she currently maintains a studio in the NYC metropolitan area.
