fab fab fotobooth was conceived as an interactive installation for the 2018 Chashama Gala. Visitors were invited to step inside this whimsical environment, explore its layers, and pose for photographs within it. In its new location at 266 West 37th Street, it serves as an intricately constructed window display–an idealized world that the viewer can enter only visually, and through their imagination.
Re-situated in the context of the Garment District, steps from the mass-market fashion chains of Times Square and the stage productions of the Theater District, the construction techniques and materiality of the installation come to the forefront. Made almost entirely from donated fabrics and trim from Materials for the Arts, the layers of two-dimensional panels recall traditional stage sets, while the recycled materials suggest a hopeful future for the waste products of industry.
