Nivedita ShivRaj and Marcus Cummins explore carnatic ragas, a journey through carnatic, jazz and western improvised styles.

Nivedita ShivRaj, vocalist and veena player is a composer, performer, teacher of carnatic music. She composes original music and authors carnatic music instruction books. She has recorded with pop star Alicia Keyes,  western classical saxophonist Andrew Sterman , rock band - “Oceans Band” , Gospel Choir and currently presents cross genre concerts with her world music band “Charanams” - the winner of the Battle of the Boroughs contest of WNYC.

British saxophonist Marcus Cummins has been associated with the UK free and improvised music scene since the early 90's. He has worked extensively as a solo artist, in duo's and larger bands but is perhaps best known internationally for his involvement in Trevor Watts' 'Celebration Band'.Cummins then studied music at Leeds City College of Music and Dartington College of Arts. During this time studying primarily jazz and Indian music (with the council of many masters such as Bobby Wellins; Evan Parker; Paul Dunmall and Dharambir Singh) he developed a personal style unlike that of any of his contemporaries.

Naren Budhakar was born in Pune, India, and was first exposed to classical music by his father who was a violinist. From his cousin Shashikant Purandare he learned Delhi style percussion and began performing at a young age. He was initiated as a disciple by Tabla Maestro Ustad Shabbir Nisar. Naren has been performing and teaching both in the U.S. and abroad, lending his percussion skills to various forms of world music. He is on the faculty of the East-West School of Music, where he teaches Tabla classes and performs regularly.

Nivedita & Marcus have been performing together on Charanams, the world music band from more than 5 years. They blend different styles of music crossing boundaries to present unique and exotic music.

Nivedita was an EtM Con Edison Composer-in-Residence at Flushing Town Hall in 2009-10. Since 2009, Exploring the Metropolis has administered the EtM Con Edison Composers’ Residency, a program which grew out of their 2008 study, “Where Can We Work?” (PDF).

This annual residency is open to New York City composers. Five composers, chosen by a panel of music professionals, receive a stipend and six months of free suitable workspace in a cultural or community facility.
