From the Black Arts Movement to the deserts of Santa Fe, to the core of Mexico, the kimono soul of Japan, the pulsating landscapes of New York City, the heart of America, Folk art traditions, the riffs of Jazz and the outer limits of the body - these are the artists that became synonymous with chashama in Harlem. They carried with them, to this common space, an amalgam of cultures, histories and media which distinguished each in a competitive world of creatives, and congealed them as a diverse artists collective. Alliances were built on these grounds, powerful artistic visions brought to life, tears shed, laughter shared, and a neighborhood both embracing and embraced. A lot of life has unfolded within these walls...

But, there is an impermanence to all things. Time and space are in a perpetual dance with change. Since welcoming chashama more than eight years ago, this physical space has existed in a state of evolution: Walls came down around artists at work, yet the space continued to hold and nurture each one who called it home. Now, in response to the call of a changing landscape, the building is finally called to a different purpose. And the artists within, who have found protection and practice at 461, find themselves leaning toward new beginnings. In an hour of uncertainty, the reward that comes with change is not always transparent. But what lives, and will continue to thrive, is the indestructible artistic spirit - one that has been strengthened and emboldened by having been here.

This is not an ending but a celebration of a garden grown, a moment of gratitude for the past eight years, and a reminder - as we forge ahead - of the inextinguishable fire of art.

- Omo Misha, curator
