At first glance British artist Richard Nott and American artist David Prentice seem to represent opposite polarities in contemporary art practice. Although both have stripped their processes of all direct allusion and reference and both are dedicated to pursuing works with an autonomous presence devoid of egotistical flourishes, their tools, methods, and results are totally different from one another yet they share a direct confrontational presence.
Nott eschews traditional materials and conducts his search in a gutsy and physical process, engaging basic forces like fire, incision and scraping. Color is the result of his choice of materials and the transmutations to which he subjects them. Creation is a happening in the moment and the pictures are relics and records of that encounter.
Prentice uses orthodox artists materials in a practical approach where color and interval are coaxed and cajoled until the iconographic image emerges. All traces of the creative process are excised until his austere and elegant canvases seem to have emerged fully formed.
Both artists exhibit works of poetic beauty. Nott opens his process to chance and surprising aleatory structures emerge that can border on the baroque. Whereas Prentice's technical mastery of traditional painting practices allows an eloquently minimal statement to generate mystery and meaning. Both artists reward their viewers with memorable experiences that become archetypes of perception.
